Stafford Robinson is a multiple international award winning director/DOP/Producer.
Over the past 20 years, Stafford has directed and shot over 200 high end commercials and worked as a director and DOP for commercials and documentaries on most continents including Antarctica. His client list includes names such as BMW/Mini, Mercedes, Visa, Mastercard, Absa Bank, Samsung, Kellogs, MTN and Vodacom to name but a few. He has produced, directed and shot all manor of TV programming including documentaries, TV dramas, reality shows, and a number of low budget feature films.
Stafford has formal 35mm and 16mm training in both the USA and the UK, and has worked on most formats/cameras including the RED, Arri, Phantom, P2, Varicam, D5 etc. Stafford has a passion for shooting in Africa and has shot in countries like Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, Uganda, Sudan, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Morocco, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe etc. Stafford has also extensive experience filming in the East, having shot extensively in Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong. Stafford’s personal passion is in documentaries where he has shot all over the world. In December 2011 he shot a four part documentary on a seven country race in Antarctica to the pole, celebrating Scott and Amundsen’s race 100 years ago where Scott’s team perished. Living in a tent in minus 40 temperatures, Stafford was at his best.
For his Directing and DOP work, Stafford has won awards in South Africa, Mauritius, Singapore, New york and Cannes. Stafford was the first South African DOP to have had a video production win a cinematography award with the South African Society of Cinematographers and was the first Video DOP to be accepted into their ranks. His work has also appeared in the International “Shots” video magazine.
Parallel with his work on moving visuals, Stafford has maintained and cultivated a passion for shooting stills that has allowed for a natural cross pollination of work on both a commercial level as well as his love of travel photography. On a commercial front Stafford has shot both moving imagery and stills (often on the same shoot) for clients the world over including big names like MTN, Vodacom, Nippon Paint, Polar Star Cruises, Peoples Bank and Prudential. Stafford’s great love is travel photography and for this he has shot stills in as diverse environments as the South Pole, Antarctica, India, Alaska, and many countries in Africa. Stafford’s photographic work is still on display in Art galleries in New Zealand where he is often commissioned to shoot portraits.
Stafford has a degree in Genetics from Massey University, New Zealand and an Honours degree in Mammalian Zoology from Pretoria University in South Africa. He is current completing his Masters degree in the Correlation between inbreeding and performance in the European Sport Horse in corroboration with universities in New Zealand, South Africa and Germany.
Stafford is a keen horseman and has had a Permit to Train Racehorses for the past 25 years. He now owns a German Sporthorse stud at which he breeds, trains and competes Dressage horses.
